The White Line PC Engine, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast

Posted By: wraggster

Heres an excerpt:

This page explores the unique game aesthetic that began with NEC’s PC Engine, continued with the Sega Saturn, and sadly ended with the Sega Dreamcast.

Shown here are all three systems in order of spiritual succession.

Behind the PC Engine on the left we see a Laserdisc, the premium home video format in the PC Engine’s day. A special LD player known as the Laseractive was PC Engine compatible, but unpopular, and the market deemed it unnecessary.

On the right we see the Dreamcast, and behind that a DVD, the current premium home video format. Ironically the lack of DVD compatibility is often sited as a key reason that the Dreamcast didn’t live to maturity.

Between them we see the Sega Saturn, which bridges the gap perfectly.

All of these systems are famous for oddball simulation series, quality ports of arcade fighting, and shooting games, and highly original, and creative first party releases that defined the machines. You won’t find many dedicated gamers that have owned only one of these machines.

SNES emu for Saturn released

Posted By: RockinB

This Super Nintendo emulator is a SEGA Saturn port of snes9x. The fast assembler cpu core of DreamSNES for Dreamcast has been ported from SH4 to SH2, too, and it is the first released app to use the SGL replacement library. These two things are the reason that, though snes9x pushes the SEGA Saturn to it's limits, the emu runs faster than any of my previous released Emulators.

The emu comes in two versions: a fast but less compatible one using ASM cpu core (recommended) and a slow but compatible one using C cpu core.

Download: snes9x-on-saturn-060729.7z (requires 4MB RAM cart, or use Saturn emus yabause or SSF)

The download archive (extract with WinRAR or www.7-zip.org) contains a couple of homebrew SNES ROMs and everything needed to build custom CD images with your own ROMs on Windows. Just click on MakeFast.bat or MakeSlow.bat. To have a quick start, the ready-to-burn CD images snes9x_fast.iso and snes9x_slow.iso are included, too.

Almost forgot to say that the emu is still slow (although I could apply massive speedups), some demos run quite fast. By using the slave cpu and hardware rendering (like in VBT's SMS Plus port), I expect it could reach playable speeds for some games.

Enjoy it,
Rockin'-B

Sega Sammy profit plummets 93 percent

Posted By: wraggster

News from Gamespot

Sluggish sales of Sega Sammy's Pachinko slot machines dropped the company's profit almost 93 percent during its first quarter, the company announced today.

Japan-based Sega Sammy Holdings Inc., which owns both Sega Corp. and Sammy Corp., reported a profit of 779 million yen (about $6.8 million). It was a sharp drop from its 10.7 billion yen ($93 million) take during the same time last year. Pachinko slot machines accounted for just 2.2 billion yen ($19.1 million) of the company's earnings this quarter, compared with 18.2 billion yen ($158.9 million) last year. The company's overall revenue, however, slipped less dramatically--a 15 percent dip to 85.6 billion yen ($746 million).

Sega Sammy blamed higher "upfront development costs" in making games for a loss of 4.06 billion yen ($34.9 million) in its games division--about twice the amount it lost last year. Sales of its video games--particularly those in the Sonic franchise and Noryoku Trainer Portable 2--increased this year to 16.5 billion yen ($143.8 million) from 11.6 billion yen ($101 million). But the company's game-development expenses rose 7 billion yen ($61 million) from a year ago, eclipsing any profit it would have otherwise made.

Sega Sammy insisted that despite the financial setbacks, its previous full-year earnings commitments are still on track.

Teenage Queen MD for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. (New Game Coming Soon)

Posted By: wraggster

Pascal and the Spounick team who we at the Dreamcast Scene know very well are to release the first Commercial quality Megadrive game in many years, heres the details from the site:

We're still alive and kicking, and this time we decided to go retro!! We're pleased to announce that our new project is :

Teenage Queen MD for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive.

It's a straight port of a famous Strip Poker game available for the Atari ST. That game would never have received Sega's approval in the nineties, so we decided to correct that mistake

The game release is for Q4 2006. We're planning to produce one batch of cards (card+manual+clamshell box) and sell them at cost price, but we gonna release the rom to the public aswell. Our first price estimation is ranging from 25 to 35 dollars.

Please keep in mind, this is not a commercial release, as we don't have the rights on the game, but think it more like a tribute to the Megadrive/Genesis and the fact that we're having fun to produced a complete new product for adding in our cards collection

In order to evaluate the demand and get a better price estimation, we're taking now pre-orders for the game cards. Please, preorder only if you really intend to buy the game !

For preordering it's easy, just send a email to SpoutnickTeam@Gmail.com with your complete details (name, surname, age & country) and the desired quantity of cards. Off course, you need to above 18

The Team
Great news for retro fans and adult game loving fans too, checkout the Spoutnick Team Website
