[Gerry O'Brien] tackled his most recent project, designing a flash ROM cartridge for the Sega Game Gear, with great success. Above you can see the test rig he used to reverse engineer the communications between an original ROM chip and the circuit board that it came on. He removed the chip, soldered a ZIF socket to the pads, then used a DIP socket as an adapter for that chip. Connected to each pin is a test lead for a logic analyzer. That’s a heck of a lot of channels to decipher!
It turns out that the cartridges use Integrated Mapping (does anyone have a link explaining this?) so dropping in a flash memory chip is not an option; you need a memory bank controller. [Gerry's] solution to this issue is twofold: you can etch your own board with a controller chip and ZIF socket for the flash chip, or you can modify a Sega Master System cartridge to use as an adapter board. We’ve got pictures of both methods after the break, as well as his five instructional videos walking us through the fabrication process.
This isn’t [Gerry's] first time working with flash cartridges. We looked at his work with Game Boy ROMS earlier in the year.

News via http://emu-russia.net/en/
Multisystem arcade/console emulator for Windows has been updated. Changes:
- This release has several new and extensive features. Input latency in every emulator core has been reduced from 25-50ms down to 4ms in a worst case scenario. This offers a massive improvement in the FEEL of the emulator, giving you a better connection to what is being displayed. Also added was a way to fix the "input latency" that plagues NVIDIA and ATI hardware when VSYNC is enabled. RetroCopy now doesn't use SDL, instead relying on it's own asynchronous window and inputing engines to provide the best in performance and features.
- With the emulation, VGM support was added and proper Dendy NES emulation has also been added and according to people with the real devices is the most accurate Dendy emulation available. The whole GUI has been reworked so that each system feels like it has its own place in RetroCopy. Control configuration now has visual controls you can click on to set input.

Another world exclusive for Out-of-Print Archive as they release the first issue of MegaTech, thanks to meppi, who scanned and edited the magazine. MegaTech, which was launched with editor Paul Glancey, was EMAP’s Mega Drive dedicated videogaming magazine and the company’s first publciation to use high quality production values such as super A4 glossy paper and digital screen capturing. As usual, the release comes with four online articles from the magazine, including Devil Crash, Mercs, Quackshot and The Immortal. The magazine can be downloaded in its entirety and full resolution by following the link provided at the MegaTech issue 1 page at Out-of-Print Archive.

DrNeo has posted a new update of the software for the Megadrive/32x Flash cart from Neoflash, heres whats new
NeoMyth MD Menu Deluxe v2.4
more info: http://www.neoflash.com/forum/index....ic,6403.0.html
If you're wondering where 2.3 is, it was a few test builds released in other threads. It's been a while, so I just bumped this to 2.4. So what's new?
- Faster loading from SD cards.
- Fix for the issue where the menu couldn't open a file to load when it opened just fine to read the rom header.
- Improved SMS detection when the SMS rom image doesn't have a header.
- Fix for the Sega CD backup ram issue (the bram size was reported as twice the size it was supposed to report).
- Changed from ".menu" for the special folder to "menu" to make it easier on Windows users. If you have an existing ".menu" folder, rename it to "menu". This also matches the N64 Myth menu name for the special folder.
The archive has all the source, the MDBIOS.bin file you would burn to the menu flash, and the MDEBIOS.bin you would put on the SD card if you use SD-loaded BIOS. Since the special folder name changed from ".menu" to "menu", if you use an older MDBIOS.bin in the menu flash to boot the new menu, there will be a name conflict. You'll either need to update the menu flash bios to the new bios, or settle for two special folders with both the old and new names. I recommend just updating the menu flash.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...icial-release/
If you’re in the dark where “Mega Drive Advanced Gaming” (MAG from now on) and “official” releases are concerned then go check out Out-of-Print Archive’s interview with Hugh Gollner, the publisher/owner of Maverick Magazines (the very company that produced MAG).
Right, that’s the background of the magazine and official permission taken care of so it’s down to digitizing the thing. First things first, the magazine is obtained, and although I personally have a few issues of MAG, I didn’t have issue 1. Thankfully, a very generous member of Out-of-Print Archive forums by the name of homgran kindly loaned me his copy of issue 1. I received the magazine and I was ready to start scanning. Scanner settings used for this are 300dpi resolution, 100% and reflective magazine filter, with image output being the raw PaperPort lossless image format.
Having an A4 scanner and a magazine in that super A4 wide format all the publishers loved during the 1990s, I have to scan each page twice, one on the left and once on the right – they are joined later on in the editing process. A quality release should also capture the full page of the magazine and never have any pages cropped. Of course, the work here can be reduced by obtaining a new scanner as the better models can scan one page in about 10 seconds, rather than the one minute 55 seconds I have to wait for.

sarang has posted an entry in the Neoflash 2010 Coding Contest:
Heres the full details posted:
Nickname: sarang
Projet name: Brave space PIXY
Division: Retro GAME
Platform: MD (mega-drive, or SEGA genesis)
Original enter: YES
Support Motion: ??
In last NEO Compo this project have won in the top 10: YES
Project description:
I just found this compo only recently. Even there wasn't much time to work, I really wanted to try. You see--I love RETRO CONSOLE!! So, when I heard it is RETRO-theme compo, I just had to enter This is my first time to write a code on this hardware (mega-drive). I thought it's important to me, so I had to make retro console (not nds or psp or iphone etc) game
So... then some couple short weeks of learning, learning learning, and, little bit of work I made this entry for 2010 summer Neo Compo! I tell honest, it is not perfect for my standard... almost, I didn't enter it!! But, then, I see so many NDS, PSP game here... and no love for mega-drive (or even nes/gba/gbc,,why???) so even it's not my best work, I'll share anyway retro console never let die!!! hehehe
ps- sorry my poor english...i got little help so game is not so bad english...maybe i made some mistake, i hope you please excuse~
How to use it:
i can make it much more difficult, but i hoped you can all finish this game ^^ the story is quite fun to me~ so, maybe it little too easy, but was my intention in this version of game.
it's very simple game... you just gotta, collect mushrooms. when mushroom counter = 0, you can collect a horn. when horn counter = 0, you can finish the level (use a wand the rainbow bridge)
Controls:
d-pad = move the pixy
A button = use the wand
^--use wand on: the mushroom, unicorns' horn, rainbow briges, boss (<3)
This game is 8 level, and you can choose the start level. I made it so you can see all level, even if you hate the play... maybe you can enjoy storyline,
but you gotta beat the BOSS if u wanna see ending and credits

DOWNLOAD: http://squarenipple.com/onionzoo/rom...y-neoretro.bin spacy-pixy-neoretro.bin (SMD .bin file, about 380 KB)
EMULATOR: http://squarenipple.com/onionzoo/roms/Fusion364.zip Kega Fusion-Window version

cheers!

News via http://runik.free.fr/comments/display.php?id=29
My dev machine was overwhelmed by a nasty variant of virut ... luckily enough I was able to save everything, but the computer had to be reformatted Long story short, I'm now using Windows 7 64 bits
Saturnin works well under 7, I was a bit worried that it wouldn't, and I migrated it to Visual Studio 2010.
I put aside the DSP for now, as I decided to do the "preparation to open source" migration (ie renaming french comments / variables into english, using boost naming convention for types, documenting headers using Doxygen, etc.)
I'm not far from the end now, but this kind of work is a real pain, as you don't have any results visible (until you break something) For instance, I spent a whole month understanding why some polygons weren't well displayed anymore, while others were just fine ... it turned out that I made a cast error in a SH2 opcode, sometimes resulting in coordinates miscalculation ...
Anyway, time to go back to work (and thanks for the kind comments, I know I'm not posting as much as I want to, but I really appreciate)
