SSF Test Version (11/11/06) is released. SSF is a Sega Saturn emulator for Windows systems using DirectX 9.0b. The current version claims near-complete implementation of the Sega Saturn hardware (not counting emulation bugs), and can emulate the Saturn based Sega Titan Video arcade hardware too. As with most emulators, CDs or disc images are not included and have to be owned separately. The BIOS is also not included; as of 0.07 Beta R3, games run without the BIOS however. The usage of BIOS files is optional but recommended for better compatibility, and needed for tasks such as management of the contents of the internal memory of the Sega Saturn, or setting the system clock.
SSF Test Version (11/11/06) Changelog:
Fessx Shima:
* I meant to be played successfully demonstrate sound Virtua Fighter Kids. How else is removed when using extra memory copy VDP2 RAM Write Timing.

DGen/SDL is a Sega Genesis emulator for Linux / SDL.
Quote:
v1.27 <- v1.26
* Documentation clean-up, sample.dgenrc update.
* Compilation fixes for MZ80.
* When both Musashi and StarScream are available, default to Musashi since it provides better emulation.
* Imported CZ80 0.91. This Z80 emulator is pure C and works better than the C version of MZ80. This means that on non-x86/32 bit hardware, games that previously didn´t have sound now work properly (Sonic 2 for instance).
Thanks to DGen PSP which implemented CZ80 first.
* Modified CZ80 to work properly on big-endian machines.
* When both CZ80 and MZ80 are available, CZ80 is now the default.
* DGen can now be compiled without any external modules. MZ80, CZ80, Musashi and StarScream can all be disabled.
* There´s now a toggle key (F10 by default) to switch between MZ80, CZ80 or neither.
* The Musashi/StarScream toggle key can now disable them both.
* New rc variables for selecting default emulators.
* FPS are now calculated every second for a more accurate message at exit.
* Implemented bool_show_carthead.
* Game Genie codes can now be entered interactively by pressing F9. They can also be disabled by re-entering them.
* Various other fixes.

Sonic Generations, the latest game in Sega's flagship franchise, has set a new pre-order record.
The Sonic franchise is now in its 20th year, and Sega is describing Sonic Generations as the "most anticipated" game in its history.
"This year is a milestone for Sonic and we want to make sure this is the best title that Sonic fans, old and new, have been waiting for," said Alan Pritchard, Sega of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.
Sega is also organising a series of events to commemorate Sonic's anniversary, including a partnership with Six Flags theme parks, a "custom playground" in East Oakland's UpRising community centre, a pro-skating tournament, and a Sonic balloon for New York's Macy's Day Parade.
Sega has seen its software sales tumble in recent times. In October, the company lowered its revenue forecast for the half year ending March 2012.

It’s quite rare to find any Sega Master System coverage in magazines online, so it’s all the more welcome to have another fine Sega Pro issue digitally archived over at Out-of-Print Archive. Although there are some fine Mega Drive games covered in this issue from December 1991 – James Pond II, F-22 Interceptor and Decap Attack to name just three – the Master System was chosen for three of the four online articles that accompany the digital release. First up is the fabulous 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the also impressive SMS versions of Mercs and Out Run Europa. To add some 16-bit action to the mix, the underrated Arcus Odyssey was picked from the many Mega Drive articles.
Be sure to check out page 72, which underwent some serious restoration work – see the Restoration Process feature for the full lowdown on how that badly damaged page was restored to its former glory. Sega Pro is available to download for free in both full resolution and iDevice versions. For the magazine’s editorial details and full contents, including links to all online articles and the downloads themselves, head over to the Sega Pro issue 2 catalogue page.

If you’re a fan of Speedball 2 then you will want to check out this prototype of the previously unreleased Beastball. Although released under Brutal Sports Football on the Jaguar, DOS and Amiga in 1993, the planned Mega Drive and SNES versions by Spectrum Holobyte were never released and remained lost to gaming… until now, for the Mega Drive, at least. As part of their ongoing summer of proto ROMs, MrMark0673 and BeaglePuss over at SegaAge continue to astound everyone with their findings of unreleased games.
As hinted at, Beastball is a futuristic sports game in the same mould as Speedball 2, but with the added ability of being able to throw or kick the ball into the goal. While there are the usual gameplay modes of League, Unfriendly, and Knockout, as well as the chance to spend earned cash on improving players’ stats, Beastball does have some pretty interesting features. While playing a match, you can expect to see weapons, bombs, shields, rabbit/turtle power ups/downs, decapitations and lots more.
The Beastball prototype ROM can be downloaded from the SegaAge forums.

Out-of-Print Archive have revisited the classic Sega Saturn Magazine and have remastered issue 4, which was originally published by EMAP in February 1996. This means this is the definitive “meppi” release with enhanced editing techniques throughout. To accompany this remastered digital release, there are four articles to view online which were taken from the magazine and include articles on Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Darius Gaiden, and reviews of Wing Arms and True Pinball. The magazine release can be downloaded in full 1920px resolution or 1024px iDevice friendly, or both. All the download links, full issue contents and info can be found on the Sega Saturn Magazine issue 4 catalogue page.

If there's one thing better than a new Ben Heck mod, it's seeing something his army of apprentices hascooked up. This time, Turkish modder c_mon has produced a striking wooden Sega Saturn laptop. It's got a 5-inch LCD screen pulled from a Sony PSOne in the lid, built-in speakers and a fan to keep things cool in the enclosure. The case copies the mould lines from the original Saturn, with the natty addition of an electroluminescent wire that puts us in mind of Tron when the device is running. Keen-eyed visitors to our gallery below will notice that the laptop's lid actually bears the logo of Saturn automobiles -- it's deliberate as the modder couldn't get his CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutter to play nicely with Sega's curved logo. Incorrect marque or not, we can all agree it's much more handsome than previous efforts.

via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...ts-pulseman-2/
“Before the enormously successful Pokemon franchise, Game Freak developed this little unknown action platformer for the Sega Mega Drive. Chances are that you have never heard of Pulseman, let alone played it, as it was only physically released in Japan during the summer of 1994. I say “physically released in Japan” because it was briefly available as an exclusive on the short lived Sega Channel online service. It was also a time of uncertainty as developers and gamers were clambering for the next generation of consoles and the fad of 3D gaming, which meant that games like Pulseman were pushed to the side.”

[Ben Leperchey] is working on building a Sega Master System clone using the Papilio One FPGA board, and although his ultimate goal has yet to be reached, he’s bringing some great stuff to the table in the meantime.
One component that is necessary for any sort of game system clone is NTSC/PAL video output, naturally. Since no one had constructed a TV output “Wing” (The Papilio One’s version of a shield or breakout board), [Ben] went and did it on his own. Using only 14 resistors and a low-pass audio filter, he was able to get the video output he was looking for with relatively little trouble. His VHDL code running on the Papilio does all the hard work of creating the video signal, while the wing he designed mostly handles the connectivity.
This is one of the first few projects/components we’ve seen come out of the Papilio camp, and it looks like things are off to a good start. We can’t wait to see the Master System implementation once it has been wrapped up!

We've previously discussed a few projects by game system hacker Ben Heck, including his PS3 laptop and Xbox 360 laptop. Now, GameSetWatch points out two videos produced by Ben showing and explaining new projects. First, he designs and builds a disc-changer for an Xbox 360, and then he turns an old Sega CDX system into a portable console

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...h-anniversary/
Right about now, Retro Gamer issue 91 should be hitting the shelves of select stores across the UK and it’s another superb cover with a foil coating along with a Sonic map and timeline within the folds. This issue, the RG team has plenty of content to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, which coincidently was released on the Mega Drive on the 23rd of June 1991. Elsewhere, there are other articles to look forward to, including The Ultimate Guide to… Smash TV, three Making of… features (Bugaboo, North & South and The Untouchables), Spectrum Games That Time Forgot, From The Archives: Treasure, In the Chair With… Michel Ancel, Classic Games (Solomon’s Key & Total Eclipse), the usual regulars and more.
As usual, the issue is also available to purchase online, in physical and digital versions, at the Imagine eshop. Make sure to get the full lowdown of the issue, including accompanying commentary, from editor Darran Jones with his preview video clip as he flicks through the pages.

Just wanted to announce the release of a partial patch for Magic Knights Rayearth for the Sega Game Gear.
David Duerr and I worked on this for a couple of years but unfortunately disaster struck in July of 2010 when David’s hard drive died. He rose to the challenge and redid some of his work.
Currently some of the menus and battle text are inserted and I think all of the dialog stuff up until a boss that we had trouble with. He told me that he’ll keep working on this if we can get by the boss again.
We are releasing this partial patch for others to play as is. If anyone wants to play the game and progress to where the text insertion leaves off, please get in touch with myself (filler) or David (ded302) (http://www.dedtech.com/) with a save state.
In the mean time enjoy the partial patch!
